Which option is the best for your home?

Depending on the tiles you've chosen, you should avoid using abrasive cleaning agents like bleach or baking soda, as this can potentially cause permanent damage to the surface and colour of the tiles. Always check if you're not sure as it's a costly mistake to make.

In this instance, you would be better off opting for distilled white vinegar from the options above…

Safety precautions for removing mould

As removing mould from grout requires strong cleaning agents, whenever you attempt to use these solutions you should take appropriate precautions to ensure that you are being safe and not putting yourself at risk unnecessarily.

Before using these chemicals you should ensure that you do the following:

• Ensure there is adequate ventilation (either by opening windows or via an operational fan)
• Wear rubber or latex gloves to protect your hands against irritation
• Safety glasses will ensure that the harmful chemicals do not splash back into your eyes while cleaning.

Which option is best for your tiles?

Professional mould cleaner

This is the easiest and possibly most effective solution; simply buy a pre-prepared mixture designed to remove mould effectively. We recommend LTP Mouldex Intensive Cleaner. The solution clings to the surface of grout to remove mould and stains with it's bleaching action, as well as preventing regrowth.

SHOP PROFESSIONAL MOULD CLEANER

Distilled white vinegar

If you're looking for a less abrasive solution, or if you have tiles that are susceptible to damage from bleach like chemical agents, then an effective home remedy for mould found in grout is distilled white vinegar. White vinegar is also a good first step to try if you have coloured grout as it is less likely to cause discolouration.

How to apply

Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle so that it is easier to apply to the affected area. Once you have treated the mould, leave it for half an hour and scrub with a bristle brush. Repeat this process as required.

Baking soda paste

Baking soda is an ideal solution for all kinds of cleaning problems. As baking soda is a mild alkali, it is not as abrasive as other cleaning products like bleach. When mixed with water however, baking soda can still be highly effective in dissolving grease and dirt from numerous areas, including the removal of mould from grout.

How to apply

Stir 110g or half a cup of baking soda with a tablespoon or so of water (or until the paste is easily spreadable on your tiles), and apply directly to the affected area. Leave the paste to sit for ten minutes before scrubbing the mould away with a stiff bristle brush. Rinse with warm water and repeat the process if necessary.

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

If baking soda alone isn't quite cutting it, or if you think you'll need a stronger solution, adding hydrogen peroxide could help to lift the stubborn mould from your tiles.

How to apply

Apply the baking soda as above, except in this instance pour over the hydrogen peroxide until the paste begins to bubble. This will assist with loosening the mould. As with the baking soda application, rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary.

Now your mould is gone how can you prevent it returning?

• Keep your bathroom or affected area well ventilated; keep windows open or your extractor fan on for 20 minutes after a shower or bath
• Hang bath towels to dry after use
• Apply mould preventing solutions as above regularly
• Keep your tiles clean
• Seal your grout
  • Recommended spray – LTP tile grout protector
• Invest in mould-resistant paint

What are Corian Shower Walls

In 1964 a chemical company called DuPont started producing a brand new product under the brand name Corian. It had been discovered the year before when a DuPont scientist named Donald Slocum had a breakthrough.

He realized that it was possible to bind particles of natural material together with acrylic resin.  Even better, the resulting solid surface material was non-porous, resistant to stains and damage, and easy to repair.

It's first applications were kitchen counters and sinks, but it quickly moved into the bathroom, where it can be used for flooring, countertops, sinks, or shower enclosures.

For 30 years, DuPont held the exclusive rights to produce this wondrous new material.  Like Xerox or Kleenex, the name brand (Corian) became synonymous with the product itself.

When the patent expired, other companies started producing and selling panels made using Slocum's process.  The manufacturers of these panels advertise them as 'hard surface' or 'solid surface' material.

Although the method to produce Corian is no longer protected by patent, DuPont has stayed relevant by developing new Corian-based products.

Some have been designed to mimic natural materials such as granite and marble showers, while others are more contemporary.

Today, they hold the patent on the first translucent hard surface materials, which can be backlit for a futuristic look.

Now lets take a look at the pros and cons of Corian shower walls.

Corian Shower Walls Pros

Waterproof – One huge benefit of Corian shower walls over ceramic tiles is that they are non-porous and, when installed properly, waterproof.  Rather than seeping into the groutlines, water rolls off the surface of Corian shower walls.

No grout lines – That brings us to our second benefit; no grout lines.  Grout is the bane of every homeowner's existence.  It looks great when installed, but due to high porosity it quickly becomes a home for mold and mildew.

As anyone who has spent an afternoon scrubbing grout can attest to, it is time-consuming and difficult to keep clean.  Many homeowners turn to cleaning professionals to restore that 'like new' look, but this is an additional expense.

Doesn't need resealing – Corian shower panels don't have grout, but they do have joints.  These joints must be properly aligned and sealed to prevent water from penetrating to the drywall underneath. Unlike grouted tile, Corian never needs to be resealed.

Easier to install – Compared with installing ceramic tile, hard surface bathroom shower walls can be installed much more easily and quickly.  Rather than cutting tiles to fit a pattern, Corian will arrive at your home pre-cut to your specifications.  Should you need to make an adjustment, it can be easily cut with a circular saw or even a jigsaw.

10 year guarantee – Corian-branded hard surface shower panels have a 10-year guarantee. This does not cover errors in installation. Most generic solid surface material has a similar guarantee, but check the manufacturer's specifications to be sure.

Assortment of colors – With the range of patterns and colors available on the market, it's a cinch to find a solid surface for your shower that will look great and last for years.

Can be restored – Should the surface sustain damage, it can be refinished to restore its appearance, unlike ceramic tiles which need to be removed and replaced.

Plastic shower walls can match hard surface products when it comes to keeping your drywall dry and are much less expensive. However, the low price shows in their appearance, making your shower enclosure look cheap.

Corian Shower Walls Cons

More expensive than plastic – Solid surface shower walls, whether sold under the brand name Corian or not, do have a few drawbacks. While they are less expensive than engineered quartz, for example, they are significantly more expensive than plastic shower walls.

Not as customizable as tile – When Corian was first produced, it was only available in one color — white. Hard surface shower walls are now available in a stunning array of designs and colors.  And yet, nothing can match the customizability of tile.

With tile, not only can you select the exact color and design you desire, you can incorporate borders and inlays.  Solid surface shower walls are usually one color or design throughout, giving them a seamless and streamlined look that many people love.

Is Corian Good for Shower Walls?

Corian is not only good for shower walls, it's perfect, especially if you intend to install it yourself.

The installation only has three steps.  First, hang moisture-resistant drywall.  Then, apply an appropriate adhesive.  Secure the panels, seal the joints, and you're done.

Corian is easy to install and will look great for years to come.  It's non-porosity makes it the obvious choice for wet environments, and no area of your home is exposed to more moisture than your shower walls.

Corian can also be thermoformed. By applying high heat to the material, it is possible to bend and curve it to fit the exact dimensions of your shower, no matter the specifications.

If you're looking for a low maintenance and long lasting material for your walk-in shower walls, look no further than solid surface materials such as Corian.

How Much Does a Corian Shower Cost?

Expect to pay between $42 and $65 per square foot for material.  An average shower enclosure measures about 70 feet, with a depth of three feet, a width of four feet, and a height of seven feet.

Labor to install the Corian shower walls should cost approximately $150.  When you add all of this together, the average cost to fit a shower with Corian should fall between $3,100 and $4,700.

Is Corian a Good Choice for Bathrooms?

Corian is a beautiful and durable waterproof construction material, making it ideal for bathrooms.  Some people question the advisability of using Corian for the shower pan, or floor of the shower, due to its slick and slippery surface.

However, a non-slip gripping texture can be added to Corian, which makes it perfect for shower floors in addition to walls, shower benches, and countertops.

What Paint Should I Use for Wood?

From the cabinets in your kitchen to a piece of furniture to a fun craft, there are plenty of wood items you can paint. And one of the best things about wood is that it accepts a variety of paints well, whether you opt for something that's acrylic or an oil-based formula. Painting wood is an easy way to change its look and give it some new personality, but it's not always clear what paint to use for different projects and applications. Here's what you need to know about the right paint to use for wood.

What's Your Project?

First, it's essential to figure out the nature of your project, meaning you'll need to determine not only what you're painting but also where it's located or going to be used. Are you painting shingles on the exterior of your home? Or are you painting an outdoor deck that'll see a lot of foot traffic? How about kitchen cabinets that people will touch often, or a bathroom shelf that'll be exposed to high humidity from the shower?

Knowing things like whether or not it's going to get wet, how often someone's going to use it or touch it and what overall effect or look you want to achieve are all essential for determining what paint you should use for the project. Wood accepts a very wide range of paints and stains, but each of those can have differing levels of durability and protection. Some paints are better than others in certain situations, and you'll need to know your particular situation before you make your choice.

Paint Types and Formulas

The great thing about wood is that, as long as you apply primer to it in most cases, any type of paint works well on it, depending on what function you need your project to serve. Generally speaking, paints to use on wood are water-based or oil-based. Acrylic and latex are the two most common types of water-based paints, while oil-based paints fall into two categories: synthetic or natural. Each of these is better than others for specific applications.

Latex paint is quick-drying, easy to clean and better for the environment than other types. It's also less likely to discolor over time. However, it's not the most durable choice, as it can scratch and chip easily. It's best for indoor wood items or surfaces that you won't touch or use very often, such as rarely used furniture, storage cabinet doors, stair spindles and picture frames. Latex paint is often the most affordable type.

Acrylic paint is ideal for home exteriors, although you can also use oil-based paint here. If the exterior is made up of different materials, such as stone and wood, you're better off choosing acrylic. Materials like stone and masonry need breathable paint to allow moisture and water vapor to pass through, and oil-based paint prevents this. Acrylic craft paints are also widely available and easy to use and clean up if you're doing a simple DIY craft project using wood.

Synthetic oil paint, which is also called alkyd, is the best choice for applications where you need a lot more durability. Think everyday furniture that'll get used and jostled often, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, interior trims like baseboards and door frames that'll get kicked and touched often, and flooring indoors and out. Oil-based paints are more rigid than flexible, water-based types so they're less likely to chip — even when people are walking on them — and they're also easier to wash clean because of this.

Natural oil paint, called linseed, is best for craft projects on which you want to create a warm, aged patina. It's typically much more expensive than the synthetic variety, which is why it's best for smaller projects.

Prepping for the Project

To help the paint adhere well and to ensure the finish looks its best when everything is dry, it's important to prep your wood to get it ready. If you're painting an exterior surface or item, give everything a thorough wash to make sure there isn't any dirt, dust, moss or algae, all of which can keep the paint from sticking to the surface. If you're painting wood deck furniture, a table or something else for the outdoors that people will touch frequently, it's a wise idea to sand it before painting to give the paint something smooth to adhere to. Splinters and cracks can also keep the finished product from looking its best, and they're uncomfortable to sit on. Let the surface or or item dry out fully before applying the paint, and give it a few days to dry and start curing before you use it. It's best to do outdoor wood-painting projects while the weather is nice.

If you're repainting an interior surface or furniture such as kitchen cabinetry or a dresser, take a look at the existing paint or finish. If the item's current paint isn't chipped, cracked or bubbling, you can usually paint right over it; just sand the wood areas briefly to give the surface more texture for the paint to stick to. If you don't need to remove cabinet paint, it's still a good idea to clean the doors with a heavy-duty solution like TSP to eliminate all traces of grease and grime. If you do need to remove a little bit of paint, such as a few chipped areas, you can sand them down. However, you may need to use paint stripper for items with paint that's very damaged. This is a product that softens the old paint so you can scrape and wipe it all off.

A word of caution here: If your cabinets or other painted home surfaces were last done in the 1970s or earlier, they may contain lead-based paint. If you use a testing kit and determine there's lead in your paint, call the National Lead Information Center or your local health department to find out how to proceed.
